Letters, 1909-1947.

Collection consists of four letters to the writer Max Brod, 1909-1927, reacting to novels by Brod and Franz Kafka, reporting on work in progress and commenting in great depth on his own Expressionist aesthetic and world view. A letter to the painter Rudolf Grossmann further details Kubin's views on artistic inspiration, development and spontaneity. A letter, 1931 March 19, to a potential buyer, discusses prices and a letter to Julius Schranzhofer, 1941 July 25, offers thanks for a watercolor he has sent, commenting on the spiritual difficulties the war years have brought to artists and on the infirmities of old age. In a letter to the Bermann-Fischer publishing house, 1947 June, Kubin declines an offer to illustrate a work by Thomas Mann on account of old age and bad health.
